Your home without it, and with it
Without a smart shutoff
- A burst pipe or failed supply line keeps running until someone notices it.
- Slow drips inside walls or under floors can go unseen for months.
- If you're at work or traveling, nobody can turn the water off.
- Water damage and freezing hit about 1 in 60 insured homes each year.[5]
With the Flo shutoff installed
- Monitors your main line 24/7 and alerts your phone to unusual water use.
- If a critical alert isn't answered, it can shut off your water as a precaution.[13]
- Runs an automatic MicroLeak test once a day, a pressure-loss test that can find tiny drips.[3]
- Turn your water off or on from the Moen Flo app, wherever you are.
What a quality install should include
Whichever licensed California plumbing contractor you choose, here's what to expect from a good install, and what to ask about when you compare quotes.
Clean union fittings
Neat, serviceable union connections, so the valve can be removed later without cutting pipe.
The right position
On the main line just after the main shutoff and pressure-reducing valve, before the first branch, as Moen's instructions specify, and placed to meet local code.[9]
Wi-Fi & app setup
The device should be connected to your Wi-Fi and set up with you in the current Moen Flo app, so alerts reach your phone. (The older Flo by Moen app loses remote control on Nov 1, 2026.)[8]
Pressure test
The new connections should be pressure-tested before the installer leaves, and you should be shown the manual shutoff.

What happens if the power or Wi-Fi goes out?
If the power goes out, the valve doesn't shut your water off, so you still have water. There's also a manual knob on the valve.[10] If Wi-Fi or the internet goes down, the device may still shut off your water automatically, but you won't get alerts, remote control or live data until the connection is back.[11]
Will a long shower or filling the pool shut off my water?
For the first 14 to 28 days the device is in Learning Mode. It studies your home's normal water use, and usage alerts and usage-based automatic shutoff are off during that time.[12] After that, running water much longer than usual (a long shower, washing the car, filling a pool) can trigger an Extended Water Usage alert. You can clear it, ignore alerts for 2 or 24 hours, or switch to Sleep Mode first. If a critical alert isn't answered, the device may shut the water off as a precaution.[13]
Will this lower my homeowners insurance?
It might, but we can't promise it, so please ask your insurer. Some insurers have run discount or rebate programs for smart water shutoffs. For example, Mercury Insurance announced one for California policyholders in 2021.[14] Terms vary by company and change over time.
Is there a guarantee from the manufacturer?
Moen's optional subscription plans include a performance guarantee. Under the current Moen Leak Protection Service terms, Moen may reimburse up to $5,000 of your homeowners insurance deductible if the service fails to alert you or shut off the water during a covered event.[6] Existing FloProtect subscribers keep a similar guarantee, and their FloProtect stays active after the app change.[7][8] Strict conditions apply: the device must be properly installed, online and paid up, and the guarantee doesn't cover damage during Learning Mode. It's a product guarantee, not insurance. These are Moen's terms, not ours.
